General
With this two-channel, tube-driven line of amplifiers, Mesa Boogie hark back to what made them the ultimate builder of boutique guitar amps. The Lone Star 2x12 has everything you would expect from the all American giants and way, way more. According to the California Petaluma team, Channel 1 delivers the most ridiculously clean signal ever. Powered by two pairs of 6L6 tubes for enormous headroom, the tubes be flipped in and out per channel, via mini-switches on the front panel, giving 10 Watt, 50 Watt and 100 Watt power steps to give you as much dynamic tube-texture at low as well as high volumes.
High Gain-Sounds with Cascading Gain Controls
Mesa Boogie are also known for their modern high-gain and that's exactly what you'll find lying in wait on Channel 2. Normal, Thick and Thicker mini-switches specify the gain level and the gain controls themselves are 'cascading', so can be adjusted in combination with each other. In channel 2, for example, this results in a thicker variant of the clean, or via an old-fashioned amp transfer, a huge high-gain distortion. This combination of clean, overdrive and distortion has never been combined in a single tube amplifier before. A tenth tube converts alternating current into direct current, creating the typical 'sag' in the sound through the two bespoke Celestion Custom 90 speakers, specially built for Mesa Boogie.
Enough Room for Your Own Character
On the back of the Lone Star, the 'sag' can be turned off by selecting a silicon diode rectifier, ideal for super-fast, tight riffs or for fans of a more metallic sound. The quartet of 6L6 tubes in the power amplifier of this Mesa Boogie Lone Star can be swapped for four EL84s as preferred, which offers even more possibilities for shaping the characteristic of this amplifier. To dial in the reverb, Warm and Bright switches, as well as a level pot are included on the back, next to a variac switch in the power supply for a more tweed-like sound and a slave-out, just in case the 100 Watts of power is not quite enough.
