This category is packed with a number of tongue drums and handpans. Both instruments have similarities but there are a few important differences. Tongue drums are generally smaller and were traditionally made from old diesel tanks (we kid you not) and as such, are sometimes referred to as tank drums. As the name might suggest, tongue drums have cut and raised sections (like a tongue) that vibrate with a specific note when struck. These drums can be played with the hands or with rubber mallets. While originally made from old oil drums, handpands have an entirely different origin, are larger and as such, have a louder, deeper and richer sound. The sound of a handrum is often compared to that of a steel drum (also traditionally made from oil drums) and have a bulging playing surface, much like a turtle shell, while a steel drum has a concave, inverted playing surface. Handpans are best played with the hands and steel drums are usually played with beaters while both are often tuned to a certain key, making them highly intuitive instruments to play and therefore easy for anyone to pick up, whether they have any musical knowledge or not. The calming sound of both handpans and tongue drums is also used as part of music and sound therapy.
