Operating your DAW is a complex job sometimes, especially with large-scale productions. The iCON QCon Pro X controller makes things easier. It's an 8-channel controller with some remarkable features, including eight channel faders and a master fader, all of which are motorised. Each channel is equipped with a clear 12-segment LED VU meter, and the LCD displays shows the status of each channel. Even the master fader has its own VU meter! What's more, its stylish black appearance makes it a great addition to any studio.
The iCON QCon Pro X: transport section
This controller doesn't only have faders, it also boasts a large selection of push buttons as well as an entire transport section including a jog wheel! There are eighteen freely-assignable DAW buttons and nine assignable buttons for MIDI commands available. Not only that, each channel has a rotary encoder with push-button functionality. You can have SMTP code shown on the numeric display, the number of bars or the standard time. In short, there plenty of ways to have a clear overview in your DAW.
DAW integration
The QCon Pro X is easily connected to your computer by means of the USB 3.0 port. It has a Mackie mode for this purpose, which enables it to work seamlessly with Cubase, Nuendo, Samplitude, Logic Pro and Ableton Live. What's more, there is a Mackie HUI mode so you can use the Qcon Pro with Pro Tools as well. It also works with DAWs like Sonar thanks to the built-in MIDI-learn mode. For controllers that support Mackie mode, there are template labels included.

Mooi en stevige design

Om te beginnen: het geleverde product is niet de Icon Qcon Pro G2 maar de Qcon Pro X. De Pro G2 is (volgens mij) nooit leverbaar geweest, de Pro X is alweer de opvolger. De op het moment van schrijven getoonde afbeelding komt dan ook niet volledig overeen met het product, maar Google is als altijd je beste vriend om een correcte afbeelding te vinden.
- Keurig verpakt, alles wat je zou verwachten is meegeleverd dus je kunt direct aan de slag.
- Werkt out of the box: inpluggen en gaan met die banaan (Cubase 8.5 Pro / Absolute VST).
- Templates voor andere DAWs zijn meegeleverd dus dat zou ook geen probleem mogen zijn.
- Sobere maar robuuste constructie, weinig plastic te zien, faders zijn geschroefd (degelijk).
- Faders en buttons schijnen van ALPS te komen, dat is een bekende fabrikant, dus hulde!
- LCD displays staan af fabriek veel te fel maar helderheid en contrast zijn gelukkig regelbaar.
- USB 3.0? Ik waag het te betwijfelen, maar kan het niet meten. Is i.i.g. wel lekker snel.
- Vergt uiteraard wel enige gewenning, dus neem er vooral de tijd voor en als altijd: RTFM!
- Geen ingebouwde voeding, dat is jammer, maar waarschijnlijk is de ruimte daarvoor te krap.
Wijze raad: niet aansluiten via een USB-hub maar direct op een poort van je computer, ik heb beiden geprobeerd en via een (powered) USB 3.0-hub waar nog meer apparaten aan hangen bemerk ik toch wat lag, en moet je natuurlijk niet willen :-)
Voorlopige conclusie: prima apparaat, sober maar doelmatig en met een ingetogen design (waar ik wel va houd: het leidt niet af). Je moet er als gezegd te tijd voor nemen om het beestje helemaal onder de knie te krijgen maar dat geldt natuurlijk voor al dergelijke apparatuur.
Over de kwaliteit kan ik uiteraard nog niets zeggen, dat is een kwestie van tijd. Vooralsnog ben ik onder de indruk van dit beestje en dat heeft natuurlijk ook alles met de prijsstelling te maken. Voor dit geld vind je IMHO niets mooiers op dit moment.
Mijn advies: uitproberen en kopen.
Mocht er aanleiding toe zijn zal ik deze review updaten. Vragen staat uiteraard vrij ;-)
