General
French drummer Manu Katché has certainly earned his stripes as a drummer in anything from pop and rock to jazz and world music. He played with great artists such as Peter Gabriel, Sting and Tori Amos, to name a few. Clearly, it should come as no surprise that Yamaha chose him to help them design a great beginner drum kit. This resulted in the Yamaha Manu Katché Junior Kit shell set in Cranberry Red, which proves that a beginner drum kit can still offer an excellent sound. Its shells are made of 6 plies of birch to give it a clear and articulate tone that will even hold up in a recording environment, and finished with a Cranberry Red lacquer.
Yamaha Manu Katche Junior Kit shell set: configuration
One issue that young drummers often have to deal with is regular drum kits that are too big for them. The snare drum's large diameter often means that they can't reach the bass drum and hi-hat pedals properly. Luckily, this shell set comes with a 12 x 5" snare drum, which means smaller drummers can play more comfortably. Furthermore, thanks to the 16 x 15" bass drum, the 10 x 7" and 12 x 7" toms aren't too high and can be positioned quite close together. The 13 x 12" floor tom, meanwhile, matches the rest of the set in size, but is also very easy to adjust in height. Do keep in mind that this particular model is a shell set only, which means it does not come with stands or cymbals.
Great for young and old
While such a compact kit is great for kids, you don't want to have to invest in another, full-sized drum kit in a couple of years. Luckily, you won't have to, as this kit can easily accommodate taller players as well. Thanks to the included bass drum riser and telescopic spurs, you can easily elevate the bass drum. This, in turn, also raises the toms, which are mounted on individually-adjustable tom holders. As such, this kit is also great for adult drummers to use.
