These days, it's easier than ever to produce music yourself and the icon iKeyboard 8S VST USB/MIDI keyboard with built-in audio interface is a great addition to any home studio! All you need is a computer or laptop with a DAW and you can play your plugins using the iKeyboard's 88 velocity-sensitive keys, DAW transport buttons, pitch and modulation wheel and even an expression and sustain pedal, if you have them. Furthermore, a LED touch strip and LED encoder offer even more control.
Features of the Icon iKeyboard 8S
The iKeyboard has a built-in audio interface that boasts 24-bit, 192kHz audio quality. It controls two analogue inputs and two analogue outputs as well as the microphone input. It even comes complete with software including the icon ProDriver VST host. Most importantly, it comes equipped with the correct drivers to work seamlessly with your DAW, including the Mackie HUI protocol for Pro Tools, among others.

Redelijk degelijk toetsenbord voor de prijs. De bak voelt zeer solide (metaal) aan. De keys lijken me kwetsbaar voor slides. Prima voor pads, maar dat was het dan ook. Wat mij aansprak was de slim-line. Het heeft nauwelijks diepte aan de achterzijde van de keys, waardoor je het heel nauw kunt laten aansluiten (lees: afstand verkleinen) tegen andere keyboards. De DAW-besturing aan de linker zijde is aardig, maar daar zijn betere hulpmiddelen voor. De ingebouwde audio-interface is handig.
Con:
1) De main-midi-channel is niet in te stellen. Alles gaat de kanalen 0-16 in. Wanneer je op één specifiek kanaal wilt uitsturen naar je synthesizer, zodat het als een extra keyboard kan fungeren, is dat niet mogelijk, terwijl de Nektar (zelfde prijs-range) dat wel kan. Drie kanalen zelfs.
2) De bijbehorende software is gammel en zeer beperkt.
3) De velocity curve is enkel “oerend hard”, ondanks de zogenaamde 6 instellingen. Gewoon op max 127 uitsturen. Pianissimo spelen is haast onmogelijk, of je moet heel langzaam spelen. Voor een pianist onbruikbaar.
4) Het help-center van iCon lijkt in India of zo te zitten, te concluderen uit de nachtelijke tijdstippen van de emails. Zeer aardig, maar ze moeten alles vragen aan de “pro’s” van het hoofdkantoor, en die reageren niet. De service van iCon “Pro” is allesbehalve professioneel.
Concluderend: grappige gadget voor slechts 300 euro voor non-muzikanten die enkel input in een DAW willen geven, maar als (live) pianist/toetsenist heb je er eigenlijk niets aan.
