Is Finale too advanced, or are you limited in your choice by a budget? In both cases, MakeMusic Finale PrintMusic 2014 is an excellent alternative. PrintMusic is a more basic version of the original Finale, but still offers a wide range of music notation options. Like its more comprehensive counterpart, it enables you to print high-quality sheet music and to share it digitally. You can even have the program play back your music by means of 128 built-in realistic instruments, so you can check for flaws.
Make sheet music with PrintMusic 2014
Making sheet music for a group of musicians (like an orchestra) is easy as pie with Finale PrintMusic. The software can handle up to 24 staves, which you fill with notes using your keyboard, mouse, MIDI device or scanner. Even MIDI import is an option, and the final results can be exported as individual parts. It's up to you if you want to print these separate parts, or share them via email. You're not even limited to Finale files, as you can also opt for formats like MIDI, PDF and MP3.
Practical features
PrintMusic offers various functions that make the entire process of producing sheet music quite easy. Based on a melody, the program is capable of creating harmonies and drum parts, so you can work and generate ideas quickly. New features of PrintMusic 2014 include the options to perform fast instrument changes for a part, and to have the entered parts checked for range. Creating multi-layered sheet music is now easier than ever, and the software's Mac OS X support has also been improved.

is mijns inziens een ideaal programma.
Ik heb vooral een goed notatieprogramma nodig voor het componeren en maken van partituren en speelpartijen. Hierin voorziet het programma helemaal en naar tevredenheid.
De prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding is bovendien erg goed.
Voor relatief weinig geld een kanjer van een programma.

De gratis versie vond ik goed en redelijk handig te bedienen (vooral noteninvoer moet snel gaan, met keyboard short-cuts), maar is verder erg beperkt in mogelijkheden.
De versie "PrintMusic" heeft meer edit-mogelijkheden, en wordt bovendien geleverd met (een light-versie van) een scan- en notenherkenprogramma. Dat was een extra reden om die versie aan te schaffen.
Het hoofdprogramma (PrintMusic) stelt niet teleur, maar dat notenherkenningsprogramma maakt zoveel fouten, die moeilijk te corrigeren zijn, dat het meer een lokkertje is dan een goede aanvulling. Advies: koop Finale PrintMusic voor de mogelijkheden en de handige bediening, maar verwacht niets van de notenherkenning van geprinte bladmuziek.
