The Yamaha Montage 8 synthesizer is by far the most impressive model of the Montage series. With 88 keys and a generally authoritative presence, you can get this beast to purr in no time. The spacious colour touch-screen display lays everything out so you can easily navigate the instrument's menus quickly and accurately and the Super Knob allows you to operate several sound parameters at once, kind of like a macro.

Positieve reviews staan er genoeg op internet. En inderdaad, een dikke aanrader. Daarom hier wat verbeter puntjes.
- De eerste frustratie: mijn pedalen werkten niet. Een Roland RPU-triple pedaal die normaal prima met Yamaha overweg kon. Geen enkele input. Mijn Nektar-pedaal: Ja, maar slechts enkele seconden.
- Dan de zogenaamde bonus-pack: Een Bosendorfer Grand Imperial: Niet leverbaar. Alleen met een Amerikaans serie-nummer, niet met een europees. Er wordt aan gewerkt, terwijl het slechts een zip-filetje is wat simpel is toe te mailen/downloaden.
- De MDF-bodemplaat daar had wel een likje zwarte verf over heen gemogen. Als je hoger op het podium staat is het geen gezicht. En het stinkt naar formaldehyde.
- De midi-channel (dubbel keyboard) werkt wat aan de trage kant, waardoor je wel eens een aangeslagen toets mist.
- De handleiding lijkt nergens op. Een beschrijving van wat je ziet op je display. Maar enige uitleg over hoe je je performances aanmaakt is een trial-and-error uitdaging.
- Vocal Harmony, zoals in de Tyros zit er niet standaard in. Wel een vocoder, dus het is wel te maken.
- De software is wel geschikt voor blaas-input, alleen is die ingang er niet. (Niet dat ik die zou willen gebruiken, maar op oudere modellen zit die wel.)
- Ik vind het geluid van mijn eigen Rhodes mooier, maar dat komt omdat ik die gewend ben. (En omdat ik die beter had gestemd dan de zwevers die ze er hier tussen in hebben gezet.)
Maar laat je door dit alles (en meer) niet ontmoedigen. De weighted aanslag (van de 88) is heerlijk. De 30 kg voelt solide aan. De schuiven en knoppen zijn degelijk, en bestand tegen live martelen. Het touch-display is even wennen, vooral met de kleine knopjes. Je tikt er nogal eens naast. Maar het werkt wel lekker vlot. Hardware technisch is het een pracht machine. Op de software is wel het nodige aan te merken. Maar dat is het leuke: met een update los je dat op en dan hoef je (voorlopig) geen nieuwe hardware aan te schaffen. En voor de reeds vele tegengekomen verbterpuntjes van de software is het handiger deze bij Yamaha neer te leggen dan in deze review.
Al met al: een droom die uitkomt. Met dank aan Yamaha en BAX-shop die de noden van een live-performer weten te ondersteunen. Het is net als met de overgang van DOS naar Windows. Even wennen, en je wilt nooit meer iets anders. En die software updates gaan wel komen. Dus schaf de hardware maar aan. Je krijgt geen spijt. Kan je al die stacks met oude meuk op Marktplaats zetten. Aan een zo'n machine (misschien 2) heb je genoeg. Wel even een paar weekjes vrij nemen om te exploren. Want workshops zijn er (nog) niet.
