General
A while back, Roland launched a series of Boutique synthesizer modules and a separate keyboard, the K-25m. Since then, the K-25m has taken centre stage as an accessory to the Roland A-01 synthesizer/controller. The A-01 is a compact, versatile piece of technology. It has plenty of connections, including CV, gate-out, MIDI (in/out), USB MicroB (MIDI), and Bluetooth LE. It also has a very unique sound generator. Roland's developers wanted to see how far they could get with an 8-bit CPU and 8 kb of memory. It was quite a challenge, and it's what makes the A-01 such a remarkable product.
Possibilities of the Roland A-01
As far as synthesis goes, you get an oscillator, a filter, an envelope-generator, an amplifier, and LFO. Oscillator waveforms include sawtooth, block, pulse and noise. For LFO, the waveforms are available in sinus, triangle, sawtooth and random. All this is implemented in such a way that used to be very commonplace, which is what makes it sound so special today. It probably goes without saying that the Roland A-01 will not function without the K-25m keyboard.
Controller
A large, clear display enables you to control the parameters using four big knobs. Seeing as the A-01 can handle both MIDI and CV, there really is very little you can't do as far as synthesis goes. In combination with the K-25m, Roland's Eurorack line (the System-500) is the perfect companion for the A-01, but you can operate this Roland using other CV-based synthesizers as well. Taking its compact size into consideration, this product will probably appeal to mobile producers in particular.
