Behringer's MS-1 is an analogue monophonic synthesizer that's based on Roland's classic SH-101. It has 32 full-size, semi-weighted keys and a number of modern features including USB-MIDI, alongside traditional MIDI. Even if you're a beginner, you'll find this synth easy to get to grips with.

Behringer MS-1

The MS-1 is fully analogue and has a VCO, a VCF and a VCA on board. The VCO has saw, triangle and square/pwm waveforms as well as a sub-oscillator and there's also a noise generator and an input for external audio. An envelope controls both the volume and the filter and the LFO (modulator) lets you choose between four waveforms. The MS-1 also has FM synthesis, something the original SH-101 doesn't have. It's got an arpeggiator and a sequencer on board too. The MS-1 also has an attachable handgrip with a pitch bend wheel and a pitch modulation trigger as well as a guitar strap to aid live performances.

Een fantastische monofone synthesizer. Ook al is het van plastic gemaakt het voelt zeer professioneel. De onderplaat is van metaal en daar wordt ook de handle aan geschroefd. Het geluid is zeer herkenbaar. Het filter is fantastisch en produceert een grote verscheidenheid aan geluid. Van het 'natte' Moog-achtige geluid tot de harde synth leads en bass die je terug herkent uit vele nummers uit de jaren 80. Het is ook een prima machine om Techno op te maken als je het filter in volle resonantie zet en speelt met de envelope generator. Voor de prijs een totale no-brainer. Het enige kleine min puntje is dat er soms kleine 'glitches' voorkomen in de arpegiator in elk geval in mijn exemplaar maar dat was simpel op te lossen met een firmware update. Jammer ook dat er geen batterij compartment in zit zodat je hem echt on stage kunt gebruiken. Maar als je handig bent kun je zelf eentje 3D printen en aan de 'strap' hangen. Dan kun je hem onafhankelijk van de adapter gebruiken maar daar had Behringer zelf aan moeten denken.

De kwaliteit van de onderdelen is stevig
Zijn karakteristieke sound zit innovatieve exploraties niet in de weg, dit vanwege de vele parameters die je kunt tweaken.

Combineer hem met andere groove boxes, synthesizers, effectpedalen, je DAW, en je hebt legio extra mogelijkheden.

Als je een synthesizer met karakter zoekt, dan is dit echt een aanrader.

Een goede SH-101 clone voor niet al te veel geld. Bouwkwaliteit is so-so. Eerste indruk is erg goed maar er zijn duidelijk wat keuzes gemaakt qua sliders en knobs om de prijs te drukken. Gebrek aan midi CC zal voor velen een dealbreaker zijn.

De kabel die erbij zit is super kort (~1.5 meter?) en ze konden de battery compartment kennelijk niet clonen. Geen idee waarom ze je dan toch de keytar grip leveren.

Leuk voor de mensen die echt de 101 sound willen. Voor iets meer geld heb je echter een bass station 2 die vele malen meer features heeft.

What can you say about this synth? I love it. I had the SH101 back in '93 and sold it...Is this MS-01 exactly like it? I can't remember, but from what I've read about it and from what I'm now hearing it seems to be a very good clone. You can't go wrong for price. The addition of FM is a nice touch. The sequencer is not so straight forward, but via the Behringer Synth Tool App you can easily get your patterns into the synth. Behringer are killing it.

Wow! After receiving the synth, I unboxed it (which was very well packaged) and immediately screwed on the strap nut and handle. It feels great and looks awesome. The sound is that of an SH101. I was creating Human League style basses in seconds. The USB connection is so much simpler and integrates into your DAW instantly.

The UK plug adapter is placed in the out box just in case you can't find it! BAX are superb and I look forward to buying more synth gear!

It would be nice though to see a moulded hard perspex cover for these synths.
