The concept of a vocoder has been around for some time and has never really left the radar since. The MeldaProduction MVocoder is definitely a vocoder but it's unlike any old-school vocoder you might have come across, and is also a fair bit cheaper. A vocoder tracks the loudness of a number of frequencies in an audio source and then adjusts that loudness according to band-boosters in another signal. It basically gives you the power to talk like a synth-based robot. Combining this now classic effect with strings and drums is a common and effective trick: so you get drums, but with the overtones from a string-section and it sounds great. The MVocoder plug-in takes things a few steps further - maybe even a hundred, since it offers 100 frequency bands, incredibly sharp filters and various other delicious little tweakable features. The mass of modulation sources provided by this software also makes extensive parameter modulation so satisfying that you could see it as a kind of synthesizer. This hefty chunk of software was definitely built for EDM and synth-pop producers but any sound-designer with any genre preference will find plenty to play with.
