General
Are you looking for an authentic roots rock echo pedal, or a wibbly wobbly surf delay? Then you must have heard of the classic oil can delay pedals. These mechanical delays provided a highly distinctive reverb/echo, thanks to their unique designs. Because of all the moving parts, the delay trail was very random, meaning the sound of an oil can delay was characterised by a distinctively random modulation. For the Adineko, Catalinbread researched the sound of vintage oil can units extensively. And the results don't lie, as the Adineko is a digital roots rock delay pedal with all the quirky sounds and freaky vibes of the Fender Variable delay, for instance, but without any of its flaws.
Oil Can Delay
In the days before digital delays and bucket brigade delays, these units were a 'portable' alternative to tape echoes. They didn't use magnetic tape to carry the signal, but charged carbon particles on a rotating disc, which was encased in a metal cylinder filled with oil that protects the signal and keep all moving parts lubricated. However, those moving parts were quite vulnerable and would wear down over time. It's great that the sound was so unpredictable, but the unit itself also had an unpredictable nature. As such, despite their unique sound, oil can delay units fell out of grace when there were no new solid alternatives. Now, though, there is the Catalinbread Adineko delay, which offers you all the good and none of the bad!
