The Z.Vex Loop Gate is a noise gate and effect loop in one and after you hook up one or more effect pedals to the send/return jacks, these can be swiftly activated and deactivated using the right footswitch. Then, there's the Gate function, which responds to your clean signal, allows for accurate opening and closing of the noise gate while the Release control determines just how abruptly the signal is cut off after the strings are muted, ranging from almost immediate signal cut-offs to beautiful fade-outs.
