General
Zoom's MSH-6 MS allows to you make mid-side recordings. Mid-side recording is an innovative technology that enables you to adjust the width of your stereo image after you've recorded it. As such, the MSH-6 capsule is ideal for film, video and TV projects.
How it works
The Zoom MSH-6 is included when you purchase a Zoom H6 handheld recorder, but the capsule can also be used in combination with the Zoom H5. At first sight, the MSH-6 MS seems to be only a single microphone, but in fact the capsule is composed of two separate microphone elements that have been positioned on top of each other. One of these microphones has a uni-directional pickup pattern, which means it's mostly sensitive to sound coming from the front and less sensitive to sound coming from the back and sides. The second microphone has a bi-directional pickup pattern, so it's mostly sensitive to signals coming from the sides.
Concept and application
The basic concept of this mid-side technology is that the mid microphone picks up signals from the centre, while the side microphone creates space and directionality by including or leaving out audio information. The Zoom MSH-6 MS capsule is particularly useful for studio recordings, rehearsals and live recordings.
