General
Shure's SM48 and SM48S unidirectional dynamic microphones were designed for professional sound recordings, studio recordings, and TV and radio broadcasts. Both microphones feature professional components and a cardioid pickup pattern, ensuring that most of the sound in front of the mic is captured, as well as a little from the sides. Their frequency range was tailored for speech, delivering outstanding mid-range performance. The SM48S is even equipped with an internal pop filter, and comes with a shock mount and a practical carrying bag.
The main difference between the SM48 and the SM48S is the latter's on/off switch. Whether or not you need such a switch, depends on how you're planning to use the mic. An on/off switch puts performing artists in control of their own sound while they're on stage, but also has its drawbacks. Even artists are only human, after all, and might be prone to fiddling with their mic, especially if they are nervous. If an artist accidentally flips the switch on stage, the sound will be cut off. For that reason, Shure offers two versions of their SM48 microphone. Take your pick!
