General
Shure's Beta series is renowned for its high quality and solidity, and this Beta 87A is no exception! The Beta 87A condenser microphone is a great way of capturing vocals in the studio as well as live on stage. It combines great sound with a durability that's indispensable for on-the-road use, so you can enjoy studio-grade sound on stage. This version transmits over the H5 frequency band.
Pickup pattern
Shure's Beta 87 A has a super-cardioid pickup pattern, which results in little to no background noise or feedback. Annoying external influences such as breath, wind and handling noise are countered by pop filters and an advanced pneumatic shock mount system. A low-frequency roll-off reduces the proximity effect, which is caused when one sings into the microphone from a short distance, making this the perfect mic for every situation, whether you're performing live on stage or in the studio.
Beta 87C or 87A?
The difference between the Beta 87A and the 87C is their pickup pattern: the Beta 87A has a super-cardioid pickup pattern, whereas the 87C has a cardioid pattern. Therefore, the 87A is even less prone to feedback. You do need some on-stage singing experience, however, as you need to sing straight into the microphone. The 87C does not require such expertise, but it is a little more sensitive to feedback.
