The Solid State Logic, or SSL audio interface already brings with it a rich heritage of analogue design. Remember the classic 242 or 292 EQs? Or the legend that was the G-Series bus compressor? Enter the SSL 2. Designed for the many recording artists among us who are forced to produce pro audio on a tight budget, and simply can't afford the small fortune needed to kit themselves out with a full SSL console or channel strip, the SSL 2 USB audio interface offers the perfect middle ground. The 4K function emulated the much sought-after warmth and analogue edge of the Legacy 4K console. Besides beautifully subtle harmonic distortion, the higher frequencies are treated with a sweet boost, adding more space and air to the recording.
Studio-Grade Quality, USB-Powered
The SSL 2 provides two super-clean microphone preamps that aim to capture every nuance of the input signal, while giving them plenty of headroom, removing the need to worry if you've got enough gain to drive your microphone. Discrete low'-noise transistors combine with an Integrated Circuit (IC) to make absolutely sure of this. Since it's USB-powered, the SSL 2 simply needs to be hooked up to a desktop or laptop for high-quality recording on location, and naturally, it comes fitted with the same high-grade Neutrik XLR and jack ports, and Alps control pots that you find on any fully-grown SSL console.
Complete with Software
Among other fat treats, the SSL 2 comes with an SSL Native Vocalstrip 2 plug-in, a Drumstrip plug-in, and a trial version of the complete suite, granting you 6-month-long trial access to all of the other plug-ins - giving you plenty of time to try out professional production software to see what sticks. But it doesn't stop there, since a copy of Native Instruments Hybris Keys and Komplete Start has been included, giving you a considerable library stacked with 2,000 samples, so you can browse through drums, percussion, bass, acoustic instruments, synths, pads, atmospheric effects and more. You even get a copy of Ableton Live Lite and 1.5 gigabytes of Loopcloud samples. In short, the SSL 2 USB audo interface is an outstanding, highly accommodating in-the-box recording bundle.

Het is een top apparaat die plug en play werk met mijn Macbook pro m2 2023 en direct zichbaar is in Ableton Live 11. Het geluid klinkt super en het is direct ook een koptelefoonversterker. Aanrader!

Ik gebruik hem voor het maken van een podcast en werkt heel makkelijk, plug & play.
Ook al gebruikt voor Voice over werk en resultaat is erg goed.
Kwaliteit is goed, voelt heel stevig aan en doet wat het moet doen.

Tot nu toe kan ik niet zeggen dat ik tevreden ben. Hoewel het geluid volwassen en gecontroleerd klinkt, vind ik het ook wat levenloos en het laag te 'wollig'. Dit laatste heeft tot gevolg dat het lastig is goed te horen wat b.v. compressie doet. Ten tweede mis ik transparantie en goede plaatsing van sommige instrumenten. Ik heb een a/b vergelijking met de interface van m'n oudere systeem gedaan, de M-Audio Firewire 410. Deze interface is meen ik alweer zo'n 10 jr. oud.
Ik heb dus dezelfde track op deze 2 interfaces tegelijkertijd afgespeeld en daartussen geschakeld.
Vooral opvallend was een Rhodes piano waarbij op de M-Audio de aanslagen en plaatsing duidelijk waarneembaar waren. Dit was niet het geval bij de SSL2. Daarnaast vond ik het laag van de SSL, zoals ik al eerder aangaf, te 'wollig', terwijl de M-Audio een compacter en duidelijker gedefinieerd laag liet horen.
Op de M-audio zijn (met hoofdtelefoon) veranderingen in de mix of mastering tot in tienden van dB's waar te nemen. Dit lukt me niet met de SSL.
Ook heb ik de SSL2 vergeleken met m'n DAC/Headphone Amp, de 'Topping DX3Pro (met ASIO)' en daar geldt eigenlijk hetzelfde verhaal als voor de M-Audio Firewire 410.
Hoewel niet ideaal, wordt deze nu ingezet als audio interface. Niet het volwassen en gecontroleerde geluid van de SSL, maar wel een stuk levendiger en transparanter.
Er is overigens m.i. niets mis/defect met de SSL2. Ik vermoed dat dit de 'SSL Sound' is. Een sound die, ondanks de kritiek die ik heb, best lekker klinkt. Maar dan wel om naar te luisteren en niet om mee te werken.
En daarom staat deze interface nu in de huiskamer, aangesloten op een laptop, een oude Amerikaanse versterker en oude Engelse grote speakers.
Conclusie (voor mij): Hoewel ik best van een 'laid back' sound houd om naar te luisteren, wil ik vooral zoveel mogelijk kunnen horen wanneer ik aan iets werk (als hobby). En de SSL2 doet dat voor mijn gevoel niet voldoende.
Hoewel ik nu in alle opzichten vooruit ben gegaan, was dit bepaald niet wat ik voor ogen had toen ik deze interface aanschafte.
Jammer.
