Bold styling and modern playability has been seamlessly mashed together in the familiar yet alien shape of the Squier Contemporary Stratocaster HH FR. This Strat comes uniquely mounted with a pair of powerful Squier SQR Atomic humbuckers supported by a five-way switch. In position 2, the coil-tap is activated to split the humbuckers in two, accessing the sound of a single-coil at the neck and at the bridge. Switch up to position 4 to isolate the single-coil at the neck or just activate both humbuckers for a thick, full-fat sound. This edition of the Contemporary Stratocaster not only sounds singular, but comes finished with a black pickguard and matching headstock.

The Contemporary Stratocaster HH FR: Accurate Playability

As hinted at by the additional 'FR' in the name, this Strat has been loaded with the full-force of a Floyd Rose double locking tremolo. This floating bridge is able to shape the most extreme vibrato playing effects in living memory while capably maintaining unshakable tuning stability. This has been paired up with a comfortably rounded heel and neck plate for eased access to each of the 22 jumbo frets and a roasted maple neck, which not only adds a lush, aged look, but firms up the stability and comes coated in satin-gloss for a gliding, super-smooth playing feel.

Altijd lastig om een relatief goedkoop product adequaat te beoordelen. De gitaar kwam in vrij slechte staat binnen; zeer oude versleten snaren, frets vuil en in slechte conditie en de afwerking van het hout (de uitsnede van de Floyd Rose) was erg afgeraffeld. Maar... wat mag je verwachten van een gitaar van omstreeks €400 met een Floyd Rose? De positieve punten echter; de roasted maple neck voelde vanaf het eerste moment al goed aan. Afwerking was prima en ik had geen last van uitstekende fretten. Nek voelt en speelt soepel. Dit is mijn eerste gitaar met Floyd Rose, dus ik heb geen vergelijkingsmateriaal, maar als je wat tijd en moeite steekt in de setup is deze oké. Ik merk wel dat ik vaak nog bij moet stemmen met de microtuners, maar als ik dat heb gedaan blijft hij onder divebombs e.d. wel gewoon stabiel in tune. De roze metallic lak is ook erg mooi, goed afgewerkt. Ondanks de staat van de fretten en dergelijke voelt de gitaar heel goed aan nadat ik wat tijd en moeite had gestoken in de setup. Wel merk ik dat ik sommige fretten - ondanks veel schoonmaken/polijsten - niet helemaal mooi glanzend krijg door het aangetaste vuil bij de oplevering. De standaard pickups vond ik aardig goed klinken. Zeker voor (80s)rock sounds. De cleans vond ik daarentegen wat minder klinken en de neck pickup vrij donker. De gitaar is erg licht, wat ontzettend prettig is en makkelijk te dragen en je kan hem dus makkelijk langere tijd over je schouder dragen bij staand spel.

Kortom; Als je wat tijd en moeite steekt in de setup en je verwachtingen bijstelt naar een gitaar van €400 dan ben je denk ik erg tevreden!
