El Polyend Tracker ha llegado para quedarse. Aunque esta edición Plus tiene el mismo formato que el Tracker original, bajo el capó se encuentran varias mejoras. Para lo que técnicamente es un producto de nicho, el Tracker original y el más recientemente lanzado Tracker Mini han encontrado su camino a muchos diseñadores de sonido felices, por lo que no es de extrañar que Polyend ahora sirva un modelo de nueva generación.
Características del Polyend Tracker
El Polyend Tracker+ no sólo tiene cinco veces más capacidad de memoria de muestras que su predecesor, sino también reproducción de muestras estéreo y cuatro motores de sintetizador adicionales. El motor ACD te ofrece síntesis analógica virtual basada en una configuración de oscilador único; el motor FAT simula sintetizadores analógicos vintage de 3 osciladores; el motor VAP es un polisintetizador analógico virtual cargado con osciladores y un gran número de opciones de modulación; y el motor WTFM es un sintetizador FM de 2 operadores basado en tablas de ondas con tres feedbacks. Además, cuenta con el PERC: una caja de ritmos directa para sonidos clásicos de estilo x0x y mucho más. Cuando se utiliza como interfaz de audio USB, el Tracker+ proporciona catorce pistas de audio estéreo para un total de dieciséis pistas que se pueden rellenar utilizando el motor de muestras o uno de los sintetizadores antes mencionados.
¿Qué es un Tracker?
Para simplificar: un Tracker es una especie de rejilla bidimensional dividida en pistas en las que se pueden colocar notas. En términos de navegación y forma de pensar, en realidad se parece un poco a una hoja de cálculo. Mientras que un programa DAW estándar tiene detrás un proceso de pensamiento similar al de una máquina de cinta, donde las grabaciones en tiempo real juegan un papel importante, el tracker es una forma mucho más nerd de escribir partituras. Los músicos de música clásica que quieran colocar las notas en el lugar exacto sin necesidad de un metrónomo probablemente descubrirán que trabajan mucho mejor con un tracker de lo que cabría esperar a primera vista. Otro rasgo distintivo de los trackers es que te permiten colocar las notas increíblemente rápido, como si teclearas un trozo de texto en un procesador de textos. Esta es la diferencia entre un tracker y cualquier DAW estándar, en el que la interfaz está diseñada pensando en el uso del ratón, y apoyada por multitud de menús gráficos, mientras que un usuario experimentado de tracker simplemente escribirá sus notas con el tipo de parloteo rápido de teclado digno de un reportero de periódico de los años 50 al borde de una fecha límite.

On the whole this device has been working very reliable for me and fulfills the expected function. I understand it may be limited in functionality in comparison to modern daws or groove boxes I am not a professional musician and have no experience with these. Live play / live recording has a lot of quirks due to the mapping from the midi paradigm (one channel with many notes each with their own start time) to the tracker paradigm (one track = one note, not more than one note can start at one grid position). The workflow is more geared towards invididual note entry / step recording whether from pad buttons or external midi controller.
The device has no internal battery and requires external usb power but it will run for many hours on even a small power bank or phone charge. The device requires an inserted microSD card (provided) to store the config data and of course all the samples and user projects. The microSD card is also the only way to transfer or backup data which means you have to take it out often which is a bit fiddly I would have preferred a compact flash card form factor or similar or a second USB port for an USB stick. Note there is no digitial connectivity either via usb or wireless. Given there is also no built-in real time clock the device does not actually know the time at all and all files on the sd card will be dated 1.1.2021.

The workflow for anyone who has every used a tracker is almost flaweless. Interface is a dream, sampler interface is clean and quick. The, albeit very basic, synthersizers give it that extra flair it needed to make it a fully standalone tracker. My complaints with the tracker are small (mostly: why does the arpegiator come with fixed chords, and cant i use it freely as i did on the amiga) and possibly only an issue for me.
However there are some gripes that had me return mine, mostly on the hardware side of things: It is unreliable as hell. It litteraly didn't work before i went out and downloaded a firmware update. It also hangs at the drop of a hat. There was not one time I was using the product that the session didnt end with a crash. On the software side, there are a few bugs that are widely know that as of currently the developer is very slow to resolve.
With regards to the first issue: I have read of users having zero issues, and I have read of users having a worse time then me. Regardless, it gives the sense of a slightly unreliable build. Your mileage may vary, but I decided to return mine as in its current state it was not workable.
I might repurchase it in a few years when the first flaws have been polished out.

I've been collecting groove boxes in the search for something that you can truly make a full tune on, the polyend is my first tracker and although I was intimidated by that crazy screen it's actually super easy and super powerful.
My only gripe is the pads need a really firm press, I'm used to MPC and Sp etc so this was a bump in the road for me, but everything else about this weird and wonderful little box is great.
