In the '80s, an important change took place: more and more synthesizer manufacturers were replacing sliders and knobs with a menu structure. The Roland JX-3P had the same oscillators and filters as the Junos and Jupiters, but with fewer interface controls. The Roland JX-03 Boutique synthesizer module - a desktop module that can be connected to the corresponding K25m keyboard - could be described as a born-again JX-3P. And the good news is immediately visible: it's got lots and lots of knobs!

Characteristics of the Roland JX-03 Boutique

In its day, the JX-3P had a lot to offer, and thanks to its Analogue Circuit Behaviour technology, Roland is still able to profit from it today. One of the advantages of the JX-3P, when compared to the Junos, is the fact that it has two oscillators, which the JX-03 has also inherited, along with the Jupiter-8's Cross Mod knob including ringmod and sync. The filter is comparable to that of the JP-8: next to the resonant low-pass is a non-resonant high-pass. You can influence various parameters with the ADSR envelope as well as the extensive LFO. When it comes to complexity, the JX-3P - and this JX-03 - is clearly smack in the middle of the Jupiter and the Juno.

Further Possibilities

As the image shows: there are presets, and they're actually printed on the control panel! How often do we get to see that? It's vintage, through and through. Making pads is easy enough - just activate the chorus button and become engulfed in a warm blanket of sound. For your performance, you can choose from the Solo, Unison and Poly modes - Unison meaning a combination of all oscillators at once (which sounds pretty extreme!). Lastly, the ribbon strips give you a modern variation of pitch bend and modulation. One last bonus? The JX-03 also functions as an audio interface for your DAW. Not even the original JX-3P can top that!
