General
True turntablists don't do anything without vinyl. It's the sound and the feel that makes it so utterly irresistible. The very pinnacle of vinyl-spinning contraptions is - of course - the fabled SL-1200, but sadly it is no longer in production. Fortunately, the Pioneer PLX-1000 fills the empty space left in our hearts and DJ booths quite nicely. And in the case of the PLX-1000-N, it adds a dashing golden touch to your entire setup. The gold-coloured turntable is as exclusive as it looks, as only 1000 of them will become available around the world. You should know that the PLX-1000-N isn't an exact copy of the SL-1200. Even though it looks just as clean, and despite the fact that you'll have no trouble using the PLX-1000-N if you're already familiar with the SL-1200, Pioneer improved the original design based on feedback it received from its users.
PLX-1000-N: close to the original
Among the improvements are the gilded RCA outputs, which is as it should be on a vintage-style machine such as this - basic and to the point, simply hook it up and you're done. You can use other devices for USB and automated DJing, the PLX-1000-N is for true turntablism. Additionally, the pitch range has been expanded. Whereas the SL-1200 had a +/- 8% range, the PLX-1000 can do +/- 16% and +/- 50% as well. Moreover, it has three ranges that allow for subtle or extreme transitions. The PLX-1000-N is a proper workhorse, fit for everyday DJing.
Innovative tone arm
The S-shaped tone arm ensures that the stylus is in the groove as straight as possible, minimising noise. Moreover, it is lined with rubber to improve isolation and prevent feedback, features that will definitely appeal to anyone who's familiar with vinyl DJing. The PLX-1000-N also has an excellent 3-phase motor that offers a start torque of 4.5 kg/cm to have the platter at the right speed in only 0.3 of a second. Naturally, you can choose between 33.3 or 45 RPM.
Stability and damping
Sensitivity to vibration is an essential factor for turntables. Pioneer is well aware of that, and has developed a clever solution. The upper section of the PLX-1000-N is made of heavy-mass die-cast zinc, which is reinforced with a lower section made of thick resin. The base plate of the turntable is further enforced with vibration-reducing material. As a result, vibrations are dampened, which is particularly useful during live performances.
Applications of this neo icon
The main application of this turntable is spinning vinyl, and then some more vinyl. Ideally, two of these PLX-1000-Ns are connected to a decent DJ mixer - Pioneer provides plenty of them. DJs who also like to dabble with digital technology can combine these turntables with a timecode package, or with a digital mixer like the DJM-900SRT, which enables you to control Serato DJ. Whatever setup you choose, though, the PLX-1000-N is all about that pure, old-school feeling, combined with the pleasure of modern-day quality.
