Auralex AmpDude

General

The Auralex AmpDude is an isolation platform that fits in any space. It is 38 x 38 x 6,35 cm in size and covered with ozite. Its purpose is to isolate all sound travelling through your subwoofer from its surroundings.

Subwoofers create a lot of vibrations (low frequencies) that are tangible in the floor and objects near by. If the source of these vibrations is in direct contact with the floor, these other objects will also vibrate or resonate. This resonance does not only occur at the fundamental pitch of the source, but also at harmonic frequencies that colour the true sound of the source. Now you have two (or more) vibrating objects, causing an acoustic problem we call ‘second resonance’.

The effect of the AmpDude on a concrete floor is the most noticeable at harmonic frequencies over 100 Hz. This is the harmonic reach beyond the fundamental sound that the sub recreates. This means that by taking these harmonic resonances away, you can create a more natural bass tone under 100 Hz. What does this mean in practice? You'll have more accurate lows and a cleaner (less muddied) crossover point between the sub and your full range LCR channels. The AmpDude effectively reduces second resonance by floating your subwoofer off the ground, ensuring that you hear only your sub, not the other objects within your hearing reach.

Whenever a speaker is tested in an anechoic environment, it is isolated from all surrounding objects that might create any resonance. With the AmpDude you are able to create a similar scenario in your own living room!
