The Keith McMillen Softstep is even faster and easier to use than its predecessor - which is already one of the most versatile MIDI foot controllers in existence. The Softstep 2 has brighter backlit controls and comes including improved software for Mac/PC, but the biggest difference with the original has to be the new design of the pads. By giving the ten pressure-sensitive 'keys' and the navigation pad a plus shape, selecting left, right, up, and down has literally never been easier.
The Softstep 2: Ultimate Control
Whether you're a DJ, keyboard player or guitarist, the Softstep 2 offers ultimate control over your DAW, DJ software, virtual instruments or external MIDI gear. Effects can be assigned to each of the keys, which can then be pressed left, right, up or down, clockwise or anti-clockwise and with either a lot, or a little force to determine the intensity of any key-assigned function. When controlling a digital wah-effect, for instance, the Softstep 2 can provide direct control not only over the sweep itself, but the width of the sweep. Keith McMillen and co. have even included an expression pedal input.

Een groot nadeel van voetcontrollers in het algemeen heb ik altijd gevonden dat het moeilijk te onthouden is welke knop waarvoor is ingesteld. Met de ss2 wordt deze uitdaging nog groter, want iedere x knop kan nu zelfs meerdere settings herbergen. Het kleine lcd scherm brengt hier zeker geen uitkomst. Een ander nadeel vind ik de kleine bewegingsruimte die de knoppen hebben. Het is moeilijk te voelen in welke stand de x knop zich bevindt. Een nadeel wat conventionele expressie pedalen niet hebben. Ik vind de ss2 relatief duur voor de aanschaf. Mc millen verklaart dit als terugverdien bedrag voor de nieuwe features (snelheid, bediening). Of dit de extra honderd euro waard is tov versie 1 kan ik niet beoordelen, ik heb versie 1 niet gehad.
Samengevat; de ss2 is een vernuftig apparaat met zeer veel instel mogelijkheden. Of de ss2 past in jouw studio of live setup hangt vooral af van je eigen creativiteit ( waar gebruik je hem voor). De ss2 KAN zorgen voor een boost in je performance, echter dit vereist geduld en veel uitproberen vd mogelijkheden.
