General
While the bigger Lone Star gives heaps of clean via 6L6 tubes, the two channels of the little-brother that is the Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special gains its distinctive and massive character from two pairs of EL84s. This combo comes with a deliciously sensual tone palette, a maximum power of 30 Watts via four power amp tubes and, since this is a Mesa Boogie amp, 30-Watts is more than enough. If it's actually too much, the power can be switched to 15 Watts or even further down to 5 Watts for late-night musings with your beloved axe.
Characteristic Brutality with Sultry Sag
While bedroom jamming is accommodated by the flexible Lone Star Special, its destiny lies on the stage or in the studio. The superbly tight low-end; the defined and refined Mesa Boogie mid-range and the brilliant high-end deliver a punch that has little trouble popping out of the mix in medium-sized venues. Power depending, you can kick in the heavy-weight 5Y3 rectifier tube for a deep, sultry 'sagging' attack; otherwise known as classic Texan-blues-rock.
Compact Size, Massive Presence
The front-mounted control panel has the same layout as that of the Lone Star. The first channel is designed to shape your clean tone with rich clear-as-a-bell overtones while the second channel is for clean-with-an-edge or vintage-style overdrive. The breaking-point can be precisely set using the three cascading gain pots that can be used one after the other. The Lone Star Special 2x12 combo pushes its delicately tweaked sound through two Celestion Custom 90 Black Shadow speakers: developed specially for Mesa Boogie alone.
