Yamaha collaborated with French drummer Manu Katché to create a great-sounding drum kit that's suitable for young drummers that are just starting out. The Yamaha Manu Katché Junior Kit shell set in Raven Black has 6-ply birch shells. Birch emphasises both the highs and lows, and allows for an articulate sound that even holds up in a recording environment. Despite those excellent credentials and its professional Raven Black lacquer and chrome-plated hardware, this is a great beginner drum kit, thanks largely to its compact shell sizes.
Yamaha Manu Katche Junior Kit: 5-Piece Shell Set
As mentioned before, this shell set is quite compact. For starters, it has a 16 x 14" bass drum, which is low enough to keep the 10 x 7" and 12 x 7" toms at a comfortable height. Furthermore, the 12 x 5" snare drum is also small enough for growing drummers to easily reach the pedals. Finally, there's the height-adjustable 13 x 12" floor tom to complete the picture. Do keep in mind that this is a shell set only, so you'll have to pick out the hardware and cymbals yourself.
Great for Young and Old
While such a compact kit is great for kids, you don't want to have to invest in another, full-sized drum kit in a couple of years. Luckily, you won't have to, since this kit can easily accommodate taller players as well. Thanks to the included bass drum riser and telescopic spurs, you can easily elevate the bass drum. This, in turn, also raises the toms, which are mounted on individually-adjustable tom holders. As such, the kit is also great for adult drummers, or growing beginners.
