Ranging from comprehensive kits developed for absolute beginners to high-end kits for studio and stage pros, Mapex really do have a model for every drummer and in every price range. The Armory kits probably sit somewhere in the middle and have been made with the all-round, pop, rock and everything-in-between kind of drummer in mind. While this Black Dawn six-piece shell-set doesn't come with cymbals or a hardware pack, the build and finish is of such high quality that the price is still pretty surprising. Also, the absence of the trimmings leaves this kit wide open for customisation when it comes to the deeply personal task of picking out cymbals.

The Mapex Armory MXAR628SCTK Black Dawn Shell Set

Shaped using a combination of maple, birch and ash, each of the 7.2mm thick shells has an ash outer layer and maple inner layer. This considered construction ensures a balanced sound with masses of focus, rich tonality and outstanding articulation. The birch gives the overall tone its high-end boost while the ash makes sure that the mid-frequencies are kept present and balanced. This kit comes with two hanging 10x 8-inch toms and two 12x 9-inch toms; a 14x 14 and 16x 16-inch floor tom; a 22x 18-inch bass drum, and a 14x 5.5-inch Tomahawk Steel snare drum.

The chrome-plated shell hardware fully optimises both the projection and resonance via a patented SONIClear system. Since they make better contact between the hoop and skin, the fitted SONIClear tension hoops offer streamlined and quick tuning.
