Ibanez GSR100EX Gio Mahogany Oil Electric Bass Guitar
Imagine my surprise when it arrived and a "quick test" turned into 2 hours of playing. No complicated preamps and millions of knobs to deal with, it plays well, it's light, holds tuning reasonably well, the humbucker sounds punchy and clear, etc. I love this thing. Granted, it doesn't feel as solid and refined as the Prestige line (so don't expect that type of build quality), but for sub-300 bucks I doubt you'd find a better playing and sounding bass. If I were to recommend a starter bass for someone just learning the instrument, this would be at the top of the list.
Literally the only bad thing I can say about it is that the fretboard was a bit dry out of the box and it needed a truss rod tweak. In fact, I'm considering getting the 5 string version as well, since I'm enjoying the 4 string so much.
