A subwoofer is a speaker specially designed to reproduce low bass and sub-bass frequencies. Subwoofers come in different sizes: the smallest being those found in desktop multimedia systems, while the largest are normally found in concert venues and clubs. Adding a good subwoofer to a sound system ensures sufficient bass tones and leaves the other speakers free to focus on mid and high-range frequencies giving you a well-balanced sound overall.
Subwoofer sizes and applications
The size of a subwoofer is normally quoted in inches and actually refers to the size of the bass speaker (woofer) housed in its cabinet. An 18-inch subwoofer, therefore, has a woofer that's 18 inches in diameter. The size of subwoofer you need depends on what you want to use it for. A 12-inch subwoofer will probably be big enough for most home uses, for instance. If you're looking for something for professional use, then generally speaking, the bigger the better!
Active or passive?
Just like speakers, subwoofers can be active or passive. An active subwoofer has its own amplifier, while a passive sub needs an external amplifier to work.
