General
The updated Sandberg California Series models have a lightly touched-up P-style body and, just as you'd get with other Sandberg basses, you're offered a number of custom-build options. While this particular Sandberg California VM5-NT 5-string electric bass guitar features an ultra-stable maple neck and an ash body, you could also opt for an American or European ash, alder, mahogany or other high-grade wood types.
The Sandberg VM5: Full-Fat, Punchy Sound
The VM Series basses come armed with a Sandberg-designed P-style split-coil neck pickup and a Sandberg power-humbucker at the bridge for a full-fat, punchy sound. The neck and fretboard of this specific example are made of dense Canadian maple and secured to the body via six bolts for maximum tonal stability and a solid feel, while dialling in bang-on sound using the on-board two-band EQ with cut and boost controls for both the lows and highs is as smooth a process as can be.
Three-Way Adjustable String-Saddles
Sandberg have provided the California VM5 with some striking and incredibly precise features. The zero fret sitting just after the nut means you get the same tone when you play with open as well as fretted strings. The four saddles of the bridge can be adjusted in three different directions for incredibly precise intonation while the resistance of the machine heads can also be adjusted to optimise string and nut tension.
